In Greece in the 1960s, the young Frenchman Jacques Mayol loved diving. Italian Enzo MolinariNote 1 had already made him his rival. Following a diving accident, Jacques' father died and the young boy left the island.

More than 20 years later, Enzo hasn't forgotten Jacques and their rivalry. The Italian does everything in his power to lure him to the no-limit freediving world championship in Taormina, Sicily. Meanwhile, Jacques has met the beautiful New Yorker Johana Baker in Peru. She quickly falls under his spell and manages to get her employer to send her to Sicily.
